check engine light on after replacing air filter
hello,
I cleaned and reinstalled my K&N air filter n my 2005 accord and now the check engine light has come on. I disconnected the clip at the top of the air filter housing but reconnected it and checked all other connections and didnt find anything. What else should I do? I have done this exact procedure twice before with no problems. Please help. |
Welcome!
Go to AutoZone or someplace like that & get the error code. Get the actual code number, not just the wording. It just might be unrelated to the K&N. But... I've heard of problems from over-oiling the filter, & getting oil depositing on the MAF sensor. And double-check you re-connected all the little hoses at the air duct. |
thanks for the reply Jim. Where is the MAF sensor? Can I clean it myself? Also, should I disconnect the battery and reconnect it to see if that light goes off. I had left the air box open all night long to let the air filter dry and that clip at the top of the air box was unplugged as well.

I would definitely go ahead and reset the ECU to see if the light goes off.

That clip on top of the airfilter housing IS the MAF sensor. It's a hot-wire anememometer sensor for air flow rate. An oily film from the filter can get on the fine wires & burn itself into some kind of tar or varnish which screws up the measurement.
You might be able to clean it with throttlebody cleaner, but be very careful. The sensing wires are very delicate. |
How do I reset the ecu? Thanks for your help guys.
|
Disconnecting the battery will reset the ECU. There's probably another way that maintains clock & radio, but I'm not sure exactly which fuse to pull. Probably different for each generation. If I remember to look it up ....

I disconnected the battery and the light went off. All seems well. Drove it around just to make sure. Again thanks so much for your help.

If it comes back after a couple days, get the error code NUMBER.
