clutch problems 2001 honda accord ex 4 cyl.
 

I recently drove my wife's car and noticed the clutch didnt feel right. At first the engagement point seemed to vary. Then as I came rolling up to a stop I mashed the clutch pedal it would not come up, so I semi freaked. I stabbed on it a few times and it came back up. After we made it home I started to experiment. I started the car up and pressed the clutch pedal as I worked the gears (silky smooth). I then would put the car in first let out on clutch, then second let out on clutch so on.Everthing fine. Then i Put car back in first with clutch mashed and it the clutch was dragging enough with clutch mashed that it killed the engine. I noticed that the clutch wouldntcome up after this unless I pumped it two or three times. I have checked for leak around clutch master and slave cylinder and I have none. Master cyclinder or slave or both? ANy thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

did you chk fluid level on the clutch master ?? also where did you chk for leaks for the master?? did you chk inside the car , under the dash at clutch pedal , where the rod goes into the clutch master ??

x2. 99% of the time it leaks in the cabin area. if no leaks it's leaking internally. either way, replace the master definately and the slave for good measure.

Took the car to the local honda dealer. They said I need new clutch master, slave cylinder, entire new clutch assembly. I am no car expert but I smell someone padding the service bill with the "entirely new clutch assembly. The clutch did fine before the pedal stuck on the floor. Would a malfunctioning clutch master cyclinder cause the clutch to burn up or whatever? They quoted the labor/parts as $1050. What a deal. haha. Give me opinions on price and repairs.

I would say DIY, you can get cylinders for pretty cheap off ebay. Or get a REM one from like http://hondapartsdeals.com or http://majestichonda.com .
of course Im a pretty hardcore DIYer, though, so I cant really talk.

yeah, a bad master can cause slippage and wear the clutch over time.

if you say it was fine before the master gave up the ghost, just do the master and slave cylinders and take the car. road test it. if it's slipping replace the clutch.

is the clutch engagement point higher or lower in the pedal travel? if it's higher(away from the floor) start the car. let it idle. depress the clutch pedal. put it in first and firmly hold the brake pedal. release the clutch pedal. does it rapidly and violently stall the engine? if not, the clutch is slipping.


i'm guestimating they are charging 2.0 for the master and slave and 5.6 for the clutch?
