code 17! ok to drive with it?
Hey all. First of all great work, I found the forums very helpful, that little hint about getting the codes with a paper clip probably saved me $100 bucks at a mechanic. I found out that i have code 17, which is the vehicle speed sensor, which makes sense because my speedometer coincidentally stopped working. If that is the only problem, then I am tempted to just suck it up and live with it. Is there any chance that things will get worse later on? As long as it is still safe to drive my car, I am happy. Has anyone had any experience with this particular problem?
Thanks |

Manual or automatic tranny? Depending on what year, your automatic tranny may get itself all messed up if it can't get an accurate signal from the VSS.

I drive a 1991 EXR with manual transmission.

As long as there is a code stored in the ECU, it will run the engine in 'default' mode ...........performance and MPG will suffer.

That's a fairly inexpensive part/easy fix usually... I'd start by checking your connections and make sure that it's all clean and attached properly, you might be able to fix it with just a little cleaning work

RE: code 17! ok to drive with it?
Using the posted link as a reference, I took my speed sensor out, cleaned it, and tested it with a Multimeter. Apparently it's working fine, it's my electrical system that's faulty. (Every now and then my speedometer will flicker on while I'm driving, and then stop working again) :( Is their anything I can do aside from taking my whole dash apart and looking for loose connections?

Are you still are getting a code 17?
Code 17 is a fault in the speed sensor circuit, not in the speed determination circuit in the instrument panel. Code means there is no signal being received. This would mean a faulty sensor, faulty sensor connectors, or faulty wiring. Your symptoms are exactly how I've had two VSS fail on Honda products, gradually failing more frequently. There may be an intermittent fault (open or short) in the pickup coil in the VSS. This would cause intermittent output and code 17. A new VSS is very cheap on ebay. I would suggest trying a new VSS. good luck |
