Crankcase Pulley Chipped

While replacing the timing belt, i chipped the crankcase pulley (see photo). Would this render the pulley as non-operational? Could i file the sharp edges down and reinstall it? Thanks for your response.

Ouch.

Are you hard on the car? Me, I'd sand/file it and go for it. The teeth of the gear, stay away from those as that is where the belt "rides", the back side needs to be clean so it does not tear/wear on that side....PS what year engine is this?

thanks Poorman, the engine is a 2002 w/ 450,000 miles. i figured it was time for the first timing belt change...lol.

You chipped this while taking it apart?

Watch for codes related to the CKP or TDC sensors. Those magnetic sensors are down there in that area, and the chip in that flange might confuse the magnetic signal they're trying to read.

I think you're awful #$(*&# lucky to go 400k on a timing belt. You need to buy me some lottery tickets.

I'm with Jim. If you went 450k on a timing belt you need to go buy some scratch offs. Not only is it over on age, but should be on your 5th or 6th by now by maintenance recommendations.

As far as replacing it, if it were a racing engine I would say definitely, but on a stock application it'll probably be fine.

There's a little point on that flange, you can see it in the picture. I think that's literally the feature that triggers the TDC sensor.

would like to thank everyone for the advice and will check everything out. truth is, i suffered a traumatic brain injury and can't work. my mom gave me her old car, and i'm trying to fix it after the front oil seal blew. i would never go that long without a timing belt replacement. take care and make sure ur kids wear helmets.
