Delayed, violent initiating A/C

Hey guys, I drive a 08 exl-v6 168k mi and I'm having an issue with the compressor I'm having a hard time diagnosing. I'd prefer to not drop a new one just yet. The compressor is taking a while to kick on, and when it does, it initiates violently (shaking can be felt) so much so that it actually ended up snapping the bolt mounting tensioner pully. After the initial jolt, the air blows cold but not for very long before it disengage. No audible noise comes from the compressor while it is running and since the nice repair I had, I'm not using it till I fix it.
Thanks!

The next step is a tough call. If this was my car, I'd remove the serpentine belt. Then start the engine. Have an assistant turn on the a/c. Watch the clutch plate to see if it engages with the pulley as soon as you turn on the a/c.
