a dipstick problem
 

The car is a 1996 Honda Accord LX. It has a 5 spd and the F22b2 (4cyl).

I was taking a look under the hood yesterday just checking the fluids and replacing a headlight bulb (for the owners of this year its a bitch if for the passenger one freakin battery). Anyways checked the oil and what not... and i looked on the other side and i can't find the transmission dipstick...which bothers me. I didn't think to look untill now. now for the back round why its probably not there is this is my father in law's old car and he is not exactly a car person. i wouldn't be surprised if he pulled it to check it and forgot to put it back. Now if anyone has the time could you pop under the hood and take a picture of your engine bay possible highlighting where your tranny dipstick is just so i know. kinda stupid but it'd help. thanks :)

It's on driver's side near power steering pump. Even if dipstick is missing, the tube should be in place. You should plug until you can find a replacement dipstick since your pcv system will pull unfiltered air into crankcase through the open dipstick.

There is no dipstick on a manual transmission for the 96.

You have to remove a bolt on the transmission and feel if the level of the fluid is up to that bolt hole. Look at a 94 shop manual from the Online Manuals link in the DIY section. The 94/96 accords are pretty similiar.

none of the hondas with MANUAL TRANNY have a dipstick.........
Like PA said,, there is a 17 mm plug that needs to be removed to chk the level,,, on your car it is located above the rt axle ( passenger side )
manual tranny fluid is the same as engine oil , any brands , 10w 30 grade...

well good thing i haven't bothered going out there to check that out yet. Thanks for the pdf anyways ;-). i do know what you guys are talking about... if i do remember correctly there are 2 holes there actually one is covered with just a rubber (maybe don't remember exactly but it was covered) and then one just had nothing on it. sooo i'd assume that is where this plug is supposed to be. thanks for the help...

just to clarify for myself that's a pretty small hole? ( well... in comparison smaller then lets say the hole for the engine oil dipstick)

I guess i could have said 5 spd manual cuz i guess i didn't realize and/or know if the auto is a 5 spd as well.

alright.... well looking at a pdf i found http://www.dhost.info/accordinfo/ saying that the oil filler plug is on the side? am i reading this correct? so i would need one of those funnels with a swively ( ya a technical term i know) ends?

Yeah. I had to use one of those to fill the transmission. I had the funnel part on in the engine bay when I did mine. I also think that I used a hose to be able to do that.

1996 manual tranny fill/check plug is alongside the axle. Kinda like 9:00 oclock if you were looking straight down the axle. The plug is #14 here, so follow the line to see where it's located in the tranny case. It's noticably larger than the other tranny-case bolts & it has a large-ish flange around it.
Drain plug is #10 which has a square hole for a 3/8-drive socket extension without a socket.
