electrical problem with intrument cluster

UPDATE 5-14-12 page 2/3 got the cluster to work and now am trying to trouble shoot the power windows. Also have to get tires balanced. And fix the thermostat gasket as it leaks after its been running for a bit.

so i pulled the trigger and traded for this car.
im thinking it is something easy and simple but i have to find it.

so here is the problem
nothing works on the intrument cluster except the gas gauge. assuming it works says half tank havent driven it much.
the windows dont work
the check engine and abs and all doesnt come on when turning the key on.
i can start the car and drive it and everything works that wise.
so i googled some stuff and only saw the speedo problem but saw the main power relay. went to the junk yard and pulled apart the whole dash and looked at stuff as well as got the main power relay. changed the relay and yeah it doesnt work. i saw that the harness that hit the cluster plugged into the computer as well as hits the fuse relay center (thats what imma call it.) pulled the carpet back on the passenger side and there is a plate over the computer it started raining. so closed the doors and laid down on the drivers side and looked under the dash checked the fuse block and pulled a couple fuses all good. looked under the hood and stuff is hooked up.
just starting on this but maybe someone has had this happen. ????
does anyone know where the power to the car body is like to the windows and cluster and all that. where does it come from and or if someone has a link to wiring diagrams or any ideas as to what is happening.
i plan on pulling stuff apart and look to see if anything has been modified or if it is unplugged. any suggestions???

ok, no speedometer, tach, gauges or windows on 93 honda accord. my mechanic did a quick check and no shorts or broken wires or ground issues. he seemed to think its the PCB in the dash. where is it and how do I get to it?

The PCB is the "Printed Circuit Board" and is where all of the electrical circuits of the instrument cluster runs through. Basically if this is bad you're really best off finding a replacement cluster.. perhaps used.

First off, check fuse #1 (10amp) in the interior fuse box. Don't just make sure the fuse is good, but also test it for power with the key in the ON position. If the fuse is good and you have power here, then remove the cluster assembly.

At the electrical connector at the back of the cluster check the SOLID YELLOW wires for battery voltage with the key in the ON position.

If you have power here the the cluster is bad. If not, then there's a broken yellow wire between here and the fuse box

Check all the fuses. There is a fuse box in the engine bay and under the driver's side of the dash.

I had looked at the fuses under the dash and under the hood but do one of the relays etc control power to these items ?? I'm a little apprehensive to the gauge cluster takin out the power to the windows also. Does anyone know if the coolant fan would still work with the above listed problems. ?? Do does anyone have a link to the interior wiring diagram

Did you look at the fuses or test each one with a test light?

nickmg555 04-29-2012 05:04 PM

I would take out some fuses to the things you know are not working and get a multimeter and ground one probe and use the other to see if you are getting battery voltage to the fuse panel. You may need to have the key turned to the on position as well. At least then you can rule out if the problem is between the battery and the fuses and then you can check everything in between.

looked at the fuses. pulled and saw that the link was not broken and the fuse was clean and not corroded it had scrape marks from being installed and removed. but good ideas when i get off at six in the morning monday ill go home and see if i can put the multimeter on the fuse block with the key on/off to see where and if i am getting power excellent idea thanks.

Last night and this morning, the lights were acting 'correctly'.
Last night I did manage to find a service manual for 90-93 honda accord. I know know that the group of light is called the 'safety indicator'.
It looks to me like the problem may be a poor connection on F1 of the dash fuse box. It feeds the safety indicator. If it intermittently and momentarily 'broke' connectivity, then the 'just switched on' mode would illuminate the safety indicator lights. Or, the problem could be on the 'Main Print Panel', which appears to host the circuits that activate all lights that are 'acting up'.
I don't see ANYPLACE else that the problem could be, do you?

Sorry I've been really sick this week. You can damage the srs cicuit and blow the airbag and get very hurt . I honestly think this is either a fault fuse box issue , electrical part of the ignition switch To the printed circuit board of the dash cluster is bad . These would need to be checked next . Sorry again been sick for almost 2 weeks .

Ok in the meantime the yellow connector in the fuse box is for the srs you can remove that so you don't have to worry about the air bag. Also it's possible it's a loose fuse or the electrical part of the ignition switch let me know if it acts up again.

Ok so forget the amp e mentioned attempt at the answer. The power distribution panel is the fuse box. Well I went through the box and removed anything that was not Jessica's. Radio and all. Some had fuses that were too big. Ie 15 amp in a 10 and did the same user the dash in that fuse panel. No success. Googled some stuff drank a pbr and smokeda cigarette. Looked around. Found the obd sensor plug and jumped it still no light on dash. Googled the problem using different words and nothing. So I pulled the trim around the radio and the cluster and pulled the cluster out an here pics. And one of the car.

You see the black spot. Looki g closely it is bubbly and the solder looks bad and it just looks bad. Google images and only one pic of the cluster with the back plastic cover off and I can't tell if it is the front side or the back.
So my question is does anyone have one out already? Can you tell me if yours is burnt. Sorry I havent been able to use the meter to check stuff my roommate has one and he works days and I'm presently on back shift. So that's all for know I'll let you know what happens.

crispin 04-30-2012 07:41 AM

I have one out from a 95 accord I can look at you.
However, the answer is no it should not be like that.
A couple of members here have worked on those boards.
I have heard many times that they are a PITA to work on because of the green coating.
I personally would get another one from a pick and pull
