Default Rear Hatch Strut

the rear hatch on my wagon doesn't want to stay up.
New struts are $70 for one $98 for the other. Do these normally wear out in pairs? Is there any R&R for these parts? Can I get decent after market replacement?
thanks for your knowledge!

I've seen them in places like AutoZone, but never had to replace one. If they're a lot cheaper than OEM, I'd probably go aftermarket. (It's strange they don't cost the same side-to-side...)

I had to replace the struts on my Snugtop shell I had on my truck. I got mine on Ebay for $39.99 for the pair. I just looked for your struts...There are 2 listings for aftermarket struts...Both are under $40 for a brand new pair of aftermarket w/lifetime warrantee. Prior to replacing mine, I cut a broom handle to length and used that to hold the rear door up against the tailgate.
