engine replacement issues
 

Putting a used engine in a 1999 Honda Accord DX, 2.3L, manual 5 speed transmission, VIN 6th digit 8.

What problems/costs(besides engine) would I have if I put a used engine from a 1998-2002 Honda Accord(VIN 6th digit is not an 8) that had Automatic OD transmission? Let's assume that all parts from my original engine are ok(a/c, water pump, distributor). I would like to stay with my manual transmission not convert to automatic.

Cant remember what the 6th digit represents, but I am assuming it is an AT/MT digit? Sites like car-part.com will show engines that fit your car. Likely 98-02 LX and DX.

I would stick with the MT. You would change the flex plate for the clutch and flywheel. Use the original parts from your engine when possible. Definitely use the the MT starter.

If you are not sure, look up oem parts numbers for the your vehicle and the donor vehicle on a parts site like Majestic Honda or hondapartsnow.com. Use the part from your car if the part number is different.

If you find a VTEC engine, you'll want to grab the ECU to match. Not sure, but I bet the car's wiring harness is the same and you'll only need the engine's wiring harness for the VTEC stuff.

Don't get a ULEV-VTEC, because the whole car's wiring harness is different.

And I agree you should stick with your manual transmission.
- less work to convert pedals, shift-lever, etc
- you said you WANT manual (I'm with you on that)
- 98-02 automatics are kinda, well, fragile.
