Engine & Transmission Mounts

I need to replace the rear engine mount and transmission mount on my 1996 Accord.

Here's my questions:https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/image/s13.gif

1) How much should each repair cost? I've been told replacing the rear engine mount is a big job - is this because the engine has to held in place when the rear mount is removed?

2) Must I use Honda parts? I have a quote from a Honda dealer of $325 for the rear motor mount.

FYI, when the other two engine mounts were replaced - no lectures, I should have replaced all three at the same time, but $$$$$$ are an issue - the after-market parts caused vibration. When the Honda parts were installed, bingo no vibration. I smell proprietary non-sense here.https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/image/s12.gif

1)yeah it is a bigger job, its also just a pain to get to cause there is alot of stuff in the way.

2)that doesnt seem like a terrible price, but Honda dealerships are normally more expensive than independent garages

Aftermarket motor moints cause vibration because they are supposed to, they are meant to be stiffer than stock motor mounts to decrease wheel hop and such and hense cause vibration at idle.

Ok - good to know.

So, here's my next question. Sears quoted me a price, with parts, labor, and tax of $700 for the rear engine mount job.

Is that a reasonable amount, considering about $350 of that is just for the part?

Must be an automatic tranny... With an auto, that rear engine mount is vacuum-operated. It is controlled by the ECU so it makes itself softer when the engine is idling in gear.

So not only is that mount buried &difficult to get at, its also amore complicated part.

Honda Genuine motor mounts are in there, much cheaper, from our sponsor, T.A.S. Auto. Just buy the parts and ask the shop to install them for you.

Thanks for the information - amazing how even motor mounts become an expensive issue.

BTW, Jim refers to "ECU" control. What does that stand for?

Engine Control Unit, the computer that controls the injectors and spark, along with a few other things like VTEC.
