fuel tank capacity

Something that I have been trying to figure out here recently is the actual capacity of my fuel tank. Chilton's manual says 14 gallons, Haynes manual says 17 gallons, but if I fill up when my gas guage is on E Ive not gotten anymore than 13.5 in there? what is the actual capacity??

RE: fuel tank capacity

Absolute capacityis 17 gallons. However, all of that may not be usable. I've never put more than 14-14.5 gallons in the 90Ex I used to have or the 94Ex I currently have, even after running what I thought was dangerously low.

My 94EX has caused my some excitement lately when fuel level was low; < 1/8 tank. Engine would die after a hard braking event, and took a bit of turn-over in neutral to start. On one occasion, I was in the inside lane of a major freeway and had some real anxiety till it restarted. I don't remember happening before a recent fuel pump replacement. Not sure what's going on.

good luck

all accords from 1994-2002 have a 17.1 gallon fuel tank. when the light comes on you still have approximately 3.5 gallons left. I am not sure about the newer accords but i am almost sure it is the same 17.1 gals. in my 94 the most I was able to put in was 15.5 gallons after driving about 530 miles Interestingly enough the TL/CL has the same size gas tank :P and I can go about500 miles on the same amt of fuel.

it's still 17.1 gal.

and the damn idiot light comes on way too early. 4 gal left in my car.

it might as well be on all the time.

I don't think my gas light comes on... I've never even needed it. Why is it so hard for people to look from one gauge to another?

RE: fuel tank capacity

we had this discussion a while ago and the conclusion that we basically came to is that honda engineered it to read empty with 4 gals still left in the tank. This way it protects the fuel pump a little better.

ah ok well at least I know when Im sitting on E i have at least 4 gallons left. I just didnt know considering like I said Ive never put more than 13.5 gallons in it to fill it up. thanks guys.

never trust your gauges anyway, you should be monitoring your mileage as well to make sure you're average stays the average...

RE: fuel tank capacity

that's for sure.... my 81 civic reads on E when it's empty.... dead on E, none of this below the line stuff.... I found that out the hard way *L* It's only got like an 8 gallon tank though

drummer1279 12-18-2007 04:08 PM

RE: fuel tank capacity

its always averaged about 330 miles the way I read the guage, when full it goes past the F and will sit there for the first 50 or so miles driven then start its descent from there. the lowest Ive gotten it before putting gas back in, is dead on E and the gas light didnt come on.

not everyone can look at the number of miles travelled, i usually dont have enough money to fill up the tank all the way, so i usually put exactly $20 in at a time and leave it.

agreed.. I'm a broke SOB but I know that my car averages at least 28mpg so I just reset the trip meter each time I add a few gallons then I know after x miles I'm about due...

oh I only fill up on payday, and then until next payday I put anywhere from $6-$20 in depending on how much I drive. Ive been putting about 400 miles a week on her the past few months.

Old thread, but a google search led me here.
So my 94 EX has a 17 gallon tank?
I got it used from someone I know, and never had the gas light on.
Is it suppose to come on lower than this? I am afraid to try any farther, lol.

fuel capacity for 1992 honda accord lx

As per reading my owners manual, it states the tank is 17.1 gallons but, 3 gallons of that is not used for fuel but, for air and fuel expansion. So I assume this to be true for other years and models also.

CreativeWriterInSpace 06-08-2014 11:12 AM

I'm another person that google lead here-

I guess it's good to know. I just got a '95 Accord and we couldn't get more than 13.2 gallons in it. But the gauge also didn't reach the "F" line, just sat a couple millimeters under it. Any ideas?

I'm going to have to start doing fuel by mileage. The odometer in my old car didn't work, the the fuel gauge is all I've ever been able to go on.

TexasHonda 06-08-2014 12:29 PM

Fuel gauge is an "indication" of approximate remaining fuel in tank, not a precise measurement of fuel level. I've found that 1st 1/4 tank is about 3 gallons consumed, 1/2 tank approximately 7, and 3/4 tank approx. 10. Yours may be and likely is somewhat different.

've found that following a fill-up, it takes a few miles for full gauge reading to be realized.

Drive a few tanks and check mileage to know how many miles you can safely drive the car and accuracy of the gauge.

I don't remember ever seeing low fuel light in my 94EX and I've driven pretty low. You should be able to count on 25 mpg for suburban driving unless you have a really heavy foot.

good luck

Sometimes I think the gauge is a bit conservative & the warning lamp comes on with 3 or 4 gallons remaining.

I'm not really suggesting you actually do this, but running it empty until the engine stalls is one way to prove it. (Fuel is used to cool & lubricate the pump, so don't run it dry)
