HELP: '01 V6 Cooling Fan only Comes on with AC

Just replaced the cooling fan. It only comes on when the A/C is turned on. (along with the condenser fan) Running hot in the city.

Any suggestions?

When you have a car overheating, turn on the heat full blast. This helps keep the engine cool and can prevent damage.

The cooling fan switch is on the thermostat housing (where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine). It will have two wires and a green(I think) electrical connector. The wire colors are green and black. Verify the wire colors. Unplug that connector. Use a piece of wire or a thin paperclip to short the connector. Start the engine. Do both fans turn on?

Help!!

I replaced the thermostat and no change:mad:

I did jump the switch with a paper clip and both fans came on!! Does this mean the switch is bad??

I also checked the temperature of the antifreeze in the radiator with the cap off. It was 195 while the gauge on the inside was close to 'H'.

Any suggestions?:shrug::shrug:

New cooling fan switch and the fan still doesn't come on?!?!?!?!

Can anyone help me with this....I'm almost ready to switch to Toyota's.

The gauge in the 01 is controlled by the PCM.

What kind of thermostat did you use?

When the gauge temperature starts rising, jump that switch and let us know if the temperature reading on the gauge starts falling.

Fan Switch A should closed above 199 degrees F, which would then provide the ground to the radiator fan control module to trigger the fans.

On the '01, the PCM controls the temperature gauge. The input to the PCM is from the ECT sensor. At 195 degrees at the ECT sensor, the gauge should not be reading close to 'H'.

170 degree Oreilly's....I think it's a Murray. I wish they had an OEM.

I've read about bleeding the air and that the V6 doesn't have a bleeder bolt. I will try this tomorrow morning unless there's any other suggestions

Could the sending unit be bad and causing the mis-read?

Chris_L Oct 26, 2015 09:34 AM

I bled the cooling system this morning and lot's of air came out. During the test od running engine at 2,000rpn for 5 minutes...The cooling fan finally kicked on right before the needle got to 'H'. But as it was cooling down the fan kicked off. It did this multiple times. Do I have a fan defective switch or is the gauge possibly bad?
