High Milage - 92 Accord

Need advice on my high milage 1992 Accord, I need to change the timing Belt, and well I am at it I plan on changing the oil Pan Gasket and Water Pump. The question is is there any test that can be performed prior to buying these items to make sure the engine is still good and worth the effort to change the above mentioned items?, the vehicle has 480,000 miles on it and seems to run very well still with a very minimal amount of oil consumption. your advice is greatly appreciated

If engine is running OK, w/ minimal oil consumption, there is no reason to expect problems, but there can be no garuntees w/ this level of mileage.

You should replace any seal (crankshaft, camshaft, balance shaft) that shows any evidence of leaking. I would replace the rear balance shaft cover (oil pump cover) oring gasket which is accessed when you do timing belts. It tends to harden and leak w/ age. You may need a distributor shaft seal (look for oil dripping from distributor shaft enters cylinder head).

Make sure all your cooling hoses are in good shape also.

Check all CV axle boots, ball joint boots, and tierod boots for breaks.

good luck

Compression test? Fact it uses very little oil is GOOD sign.

Oil analysis?

I would have to say that if she's still kicking with almost 500 grand, any repair that you do to it would be well worth it. is there a million mile accord club? hehe

At that age & mile, my big fear is body rust.
