Honda Accord 2001 EX V6
My car gets locked in park every once and while. Per the manual I unlock it via the key in the hole next to the shifter. The manual also mentions that this is leading to other problems and to get it checked out. What type of problems are they referring to and what is the best plan for action.

Try just wiggling it next time. I'd suggest taking it to the dealer.

check to see if your horn works. if not, it's most likely a fuse ..... I think it's on the passenger side and called "Small lamps" or something like that. If the horn works, it's likely the brake light switch that contacts the brake armature. It screws out and can be tested by jumping the 2 wires that go into it.
The symptom that you are seeing is that the signal from the brake light switch isn't unlocking the shift-lock soleniod ..... if you find that the fuse is ok (horn works) and you jump the swtch, you should hear a faint click from the solenoid working ...... and from now on, when you hit the brake to sshift from park, you'll notice this solenoid working (only because now you know that it does this). Good luck and post what you find for further assistance if needed ....... also, please add a signature to your profile to display with your posts. |
