Honda Accord Idles Rough
 

I have two accords that I bought for my girls and both had new plugs in wires are good. But they both idle rough at stop in gear more in reverse than drive. Any Ideas.

What do you mean "idle rough"? Vibration? Surging?

I've heard of this happening when the engine mounts are starting to go bad, but of course it could be a few other things as well. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along and help better. My 99 Accord vibrates slightly when I'm in gear, but applying the brakes at a red light or something. Never really thought too much of it.

Accords with automatic transmissions have a vacuum-operated engine mount down low between engine & firewall. It's a pain. Test it like this.

Find that engine mount. There's a vacuum hose coming from it, to a solenoid valve. You want to unplug the electrical plug for that solenoid valve.

Find someone who you trust... Engine all warmed up & idling. Hold the brake and shift into gear (R or D). Unplug that solenoid valve. It should make the vibrations worse. If there's no difference, then the mount isn't working.

First rule out stuff like dirty/loose/corroded electrical connections or torn wiring. Rule out disconnected or leaking vacuum hose. Make sure it's not something like that before you go to the pain or expense of replacing that engine mount.

ps. Elijah, the same story for your 1999.

Check the idle control valves.

Thanks @JimBlake, I'll try your technique tomorrow. Aside from being slightly annoying, is it something I should try to resolve or fix right away? To be honest, I barely notice it anymore.

I think it's really an issue of smoothness/vibration for customer satisfaction.

If the mount itself doesn't hold vacuum (try with a MityVac) then you can start worrying about the mount coming apart.
