Honda Accord Maintenance

I have a 96 Accord with a 2.2L VTec engine. It is time to replace my timing belt and I wanted to know what other things need to be replaced along with this. In the past I have been told by the shops to have my water pump replaced and my valves adjusted. Is this really needed or are they just getting some extra $$'s out of me.
Thanks,

RE: Honda Accord Maintenance

I'm new to the site and just saw your question.

IMHO, I'd replace the water pump and all the other belts. You don't want the shop (dealer ?) going in there again, taking apart what they put in.

As for the valve adjustment, Honda does recommend it. However, I've run Mobil 1 Synthetic from 500 miles up till now, my 96 EX has 81K on it, and I never had my valves adjusted.. Heck, if you remember, Mobil Oil did a test with Mobil 1 years ago on a BMW, running it for a million miles (I think) and the internal components were still within new car specs.... So, it really depends on what's been in the car....

Again, only my opinions...

Good luck.

They are correct, just do it. Think of it this way.......When you have to go in later for the water pump you'll be paying the same labor (again) that you did for the timing belt. Why pay twice? Preventive maintenance..... Valve adjustment & any other belts should also be done at that time as geronimomoe pointed out.

And to you both:
