Default hvac blower motor

I bought a 1990 Accord lx automatic two weeks ago for 700 dollars. Its really clean and it runs great, especially considering it has 297,000 miles on it. Everything was working great, including the a/c, until today when the blower motor quit. I checked the fuse and its good, I did notice that the blower motor was kind of noisy before it stopped working. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Thank you Dr. Drivability, this is awesome. I went out to start this troubleshooting procedure, but before I did I tapped on the bottom of the heater box and the blower motor turned on! Any ideas? Thanks again.

I'd say a worn out blower motor would be a safe bet.

The CAVE MAN test tells the tale. If you smack it and it runs, that means it's time to get a replacement.
I'm having flashbacks You will need to peel back the carpet and get the ECU out of the way to have room to get the blower unit down and out; as well as remove all the glovebox and support brackets. Probably 2-3 hours to R&R

Classic symptoms for worn out electrical motor carbon brushes. They get loose and lose good electrical contact, motor stops. When you smack the dash, bruses reseat and motor runs again briefly. Soon they will tumble completely, and motor won't work again.

I did this on a 90 Accord, many yrs ago. I remember having to swing the ECM/TCM out of the way and rotating the blower module 90 degrees (bottom towards the rear I think?) to remove. I forgot my rotation procedure and struggled until I finally hit on the rotation to re-install. Download a shop manual from 1990-1993 range for help.

good luck
