I click but don't start...Any suggestions?
Just bought my first honda ever. I needed a fuel sipper to go back and forth to work in and got a 98 Accord. Great car. Never worked on a Honda and now have a problem. I have two issues. First I turn the key to start position and I just get a clicking noise. It seems to be coming from the dash??? Not sure what this means. Also the radio says "Code" on it and it wont turn on.
Are these issues related? Has anybody had a similar issue? I have checked the battery and it is good, going to look at the starter after it stops raining, in the meantime anybody who may have a clue as to the problem, I would love to hear it. Thanks |
How did you check the battery?
I suspect a check of open-circuit voltage (simply using a multi-meter) won't tell you that the battery has high internal resistance. |
I took it to the local auto parts store and they tested it. Said it was good. I put all my trust in the 17 year old behind the counter!!!

I picked up my 2000 accord yesterday, which is basically the same thing, and when I got in to start it it just clicked in the dash. Ended up needing a jump. Try jumping it.

Sounds like the parts store did a load-test. They usually do because the want to sell a battery, and a simple multi-meter test will frequently look good when the battery is actually bad.
That leaves an alternator / charging-system that isn't charging properly. Or how about a dirty/loose/corroded connection at the OTHER END of one of the battery cables. |
