Ignition Problems
 

Hello All,

I have been having trouble with my ignition in my Honda Accord 2003, V6, Automatic, EX the past few weeks, here are the symptoms:

1) When key is put in ignition dash comes on but when key is moved forward the power goes out.

2) When that happens I banged my hand against the dash and the dash indicators come on but car won't turnover or start.

3) I jump-started the battery the first time this happened, the second time I just kept turning the key until it started.

4) My auto-parts store friend thinks either the ignition switch is bad or the tumbler (I've also had a check engine light code that says I have a low air-fuel mixture that could possibly be an ignition problem)

Question: How do I determine if it is a bad ignition switch and if so how do I fix it?

Are you asking about your 1962 Chevy Nova or your 1974 Lada VAZ-2101? Unless we know which car you're asking about there really isn't much we can do to help.

Which engine, the I4 or the V6?

It is the V6 engine type.

If you can make it happen by wiggling the key, then it's the electrical part of the ignition switch.
Unfortunately, if you can't make it happen that way, it doesn't prove the ignition switch is good.

Your description really sounds like the switch, but not 100% sure.

Take apart the plastic cover around the steering column. Be careful around any yellow-wrapped harnesses - those are the airbag & you don't want it going off in your face.
You might find the electric part is kinda loose & not firmly attached to the key-cylinder part. Maybe tightening the screws is the trick, but more likely you should remove the electrical part & work it manually to see if the connections are flaky (not uncommon...)
