Ignition switch stumper
hi Folks I hope you can help
1998 accord lx 5 speed, 311k miles This has been a great car but recently when trying to start the key goes smoothly to the start position but doesn't make the connection to send power to the starter. If I jiggle the key or turn off then back on it finally connects and starts right up. Although it's the original key and is worn there is no binding in the lock portion of the ignition. I thought the problem was the electrical side of the ignition so I replaced the wire harness. No joy I still have the problem. I also tried the valet key which has no wear but same problem persists. The kicker sometimes put the key in and it rolls over a start and cranks right up. Any clues to solve this one? |
The electrical part of the ignition switch assy (contacts) is a frequent source of no-start and intermittent engine stoppage.
Suggest checking at the starter for 12V start signal to the starter solenoid (small wire clipped to the solenoid). If you get 12V every time, then starter solenoid has worn contacts and new starter is required. good luck |
Thanks Tex. Good suggestion I will check it out and report back

Root cause was sticking starter solenoid. Should have gone there first. Thanks to all
