Default p1491 EGR '97 f22b2

'97 LX, F22B2-
CEL comes on, immediately go to local guy to check code.
P1491, insuffecient EGR valve lift. Haven't noticed any engine behavior concerns, but that could just be lack of experience.

He said to clean out the ports and test the valve.
I found the procedure for cleaning out the ports under the cover under the fuel rail, and ericthecarguys' video,
but have not found the procedure for testing the valve.

What can cause this code other than bad valve/ clogged ports?
Thanks,

What usually happens is the valve will over time start not lifting enough (as it wears), and this causes the port to clog. Sensors tell the ECU that the EGR valve is not lifting enough (not getting enough exhaust gas mixed into the plenum), so it'll set a code. Most times, just cleaning the port will fix the problem. But, on my wife's 00 Accord I had to replace the valve too, as after I cleaned the port, re-set the code, the code came back. I replaced the valve, cleared the code again, and it's been fine (no codes) since.
There's only the valve, and the port that can cause this code.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll try cleaning out the ports first.

The valve is open/closed by a vacuum hose. Trace the vacuum hose from the EGR valve back to the control solenoid (on the drivers side of the engine bay) and check for cracked/rotted/damaged vacuum hose. Especially under the control solenoid.
