K&N Air Filter
 

Hey i was thinkin bout upgradin to a K&N air filter for my 97 prelude sh. however i have heard some bad stuff bout these filters

Hello MPWR...glad to see your still up and about on the forum...

K& N makes very good filter systems and I reccommend then 100%..
I use them and have used them for a good 5 years now.

For your 1997 Prelude 2.2L/FI ingine you will make about an extra 7 to 8 HP @ about 6800RPM's.
This K&N unit is part # 691302tb or tp or tr or ts..which ever color you pick. The 69 series is called "The Typhoon" and is their best performing intake kit. K7N filters are street legal and that is good for emmissions states..

I'll 2nd the K&N filter. Worth the money since it will give you more power and you won't need to replace it, only clean it occasionally.

I've had K&N drop-in filters in several cars now, including a Saab 900 for over 200k miles. Never really saw any power increase. But they weren't cold-air intakes like Wheel's picture.

I've heard people talking about more dirt getting thru the filter. I don't know, maybe it's true. People have had oil analyzed & found elevated levels of silicates which are mainly from airborne dirt. Didn't seem to hurt any of my cars.

Jim Blakes response matches all of the things that I have heard about K&N air filters from diesel engine owners. I have read many replies where the owners said their oil analyses revealed higher levels of silicates in their oil which will result in higher wear on the moving parts. The owners never questioned about their engines breathing easier. I guess if you want your engines to breathe easier then you can remove your filter and put a wire mesh screen in its place to keep the bugs out. That is what we did with our hot rods in the late 1940's, but then we didn't care about wear on the engines since they were past their prime anyway.

I sure would not use a K&N air filter if I lived in an area that was dusty or sandy.
