Leak or bad EGR valve in 03 Accord?
So I've been noticing some terrible idling issues (going to 4000 RPM before changing gear when accelerating to 20 under normal speed) and horrific gas mileage (going through a half tank after about 50 miles) the past few days. At first my thought was transmission fluid as its a bit low.
I noticed a small puddle from where the TF plug is and it did smell like tranny fluid (going to be doing a flush and fill this weekend). I then popped the hood and noticed what looked to be corrosion on the EGR valve: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...e1426c6df9.jpg I couldn't find any cracks in any of the hoses, and the coolant and oil levels are relatively normal and the CEL isn't on. I personally have never seen something like this before, so I have no idea of what it might be. I need to take the car to the shop for a brake inspection so I was going to have them take a look, but was curious if anyone has seen something like this before. |
Coolant is leaking from the breather hose, it pipes coolant through the throttle body to prevent freezing in very cold conditions.
Get a new hose and clamps. |

The EGR valve is probably fine.
Yes, the short hose on the left. Check and top off the coolant too afterward, that could have been the cause of your idling problem. |
Don't just check the level in the plastic overflow bottle. Remove the radiator cap (on a cold engine) and fill up the radiator.
You can see the leak at the 7 o'clock position on the face of the EGR valve. You should just clean off the outside of the EGR valve and shouldn't need to replace the valve. You would only need to replace if you get a CEL and the EGR valve tests bad. |
I'll do the fluid check and possible flush and change this weekend. :)
I called the dealership and hose part number: 19514-RAA-A00. Thanks again for all the help! |
