LONG CRANK TIME IN COLD WEATHER

93 ACCORD EX A/T...
HAVING A COLD WEATHER STARTING PROBLEM (30-45 DEGREES).
WHEN THE WEATHER TURNED A LITTLE COLDER IT TAKES 7-10 SECONDS OR MORE FOR THE ENGINE TO ATTEMPT TO START, WITH JUST A SPUTTER. THEN MORE CRANKING WILL GET THE ENGINE TO START AND SLOWLY GET TO A FAST IDLE. WHEN IT IS WARM OUT THERE ARE NO STARTING PROBLEMS AT ALL. ALSO DRIVES FINE.

1. TRIED NEW BATTERY NO HELP, WAS SWAPPED FROM ANOTHER CAR.

2. FOUND BOTH WIRES AT T/W (ECT) SENSOR BARE. FIXED WIRE AND REPLACED T/W SENSOR- NO HELP

3. FOUND OIL IN PLUG WIRES AND #4 PLUG WIRE NOT HAVING A GOOD CONNECTION.
REPLACED WIRES AND PLUGS & CLEANED OUT OIL FROM BAD LOWER SEALS.
WILL FIX LATER.

4. CHANGED OUT FUEL FILTER ON FIRE WALL. HAD A LITTLE DIRT IN FILTER NOT BAD.
NO HELP.

5.NEED HELP PLEASE. WHAT CAN I TEST NEXT. THANK YOU

RE: LONG CRANK TIME IN COLD WEATHER

Did doing any of that improve anything?

RE: LONG CRANK TIME IN COLD WEATHER

can you check fuel pressure? this will tell you if the pressure is too low or if it's leaking down from leaking injectors or a bad fuel pump check valve.

did you inspect the fuel pressure regulator? remove the fpr vacuum line while the engine is running. does any fuel spill out? can you coax any fuel out by feathering the vacuum line on the port a few times?

if you suspect the problem will happen on a partiucular start up, try holding the pedal to the floor while cranking. any improvement?

BlkcurrantKord,
What i have done already has not helped. Also there is no fault codes or check engine light.

Hondatechav6, (I sent you a pm.)
I will be able to try what you suggested in the am, Once you get it started the problem goes away.
Thank You for a place to start.

I have the same problem with mine, but if i turn the key to the "on" position until I hear the fuel pump stop it will fire up no problems. Mine is from a leaking injector, but try turning the key on and letting the fuel system pressurize before crankingand see if that helps.

Thx's Jakeb,
I can do that with the on and off but no help.

This might or might not have any bearing on your problem, but how old are the spark plugs?

Johnl, Plugs are band new. Ken

It may be the fast idle valve is not opening when cold. This may cause and over-rich mixture and slow start. You check by removing the cover and using finger to check for air flow when engine is cold. It's operated by a wax pellet and these fail regularly in coolant thermostats.

good luck

TexasHonda,
Can i do any thing to check this with engine not running. Because after i get it started it starts every time. Ken

RE: LONG CRANK TIME IN COLD WEATHER

It looks to me like pintle up is closed position, and should be open if temp is < 86F. Perhaps someone else can confirm if pintle up is closed.

good luck

UPDATE. STILL HAVE COLD START ISSUE.
HAVE HAD SOME TIME TO LOOK AT CAR AND FOUND WITH TIMING LIGHT HOOKED UP AT CRANK. THERE IS NO PLUSE. CHECKED 4 PINS ON COIL AND FOUND THAT IT HAD AN OPEN LEG. PIGGY- BACKED IN NEW COIL NO HELP. STILL NO SPARK WITH SPARK PLUG GOING TO BODY GROUND (UNTIL RIGHT BEFOE YOU TURN OFF CAR. PLAYED WITH KEY NO HELP). I WAS GOING TO LOOK AT ICM NEXT. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS ?,,,,KEN

RE: LONG CRANK TIME IN COLD WEATHER

The 4 pins to the coil represent two pins to each winding; primary and secondary. A VOM resistance measurement should show high resistance 13-19 Kohms on secondary and low resistance (< 5 ohms but check spec) on primary. If either primary or secondary circuit is "open" or infinite resistance at any time, the coil is defective.

Note, you need the pin-outs of the coil to be sure to measure resistance across correct pins. The primary and secondary circuits are isolated from each other so a resistance measurement from a primary pin to a secondary pin should show infinite resistance.

good luck

It still may be a flaky ignition switch?

You said wiggling the key doesn't help. But that's a kind of one-sidedtest; itonly means something if it DOES duplicate the problem. It doesn't completely rule out the ignition switch.

i dont see how the ign switch could be causing this problem if it cranks fine, but just takes awile to start.

Something unusual here. If coil primary or secondary is open, the car will never start. I have heard of an intermittent coil, but usually the other way, coil fails on warmup, not at cold start.

good luck

RE: LONG CRANK TIME IN COLD WEATHER

I think pretty much all cars take longer to crank in the morning and in the cold. Mine does the exact same thing as yours, only not nearly as long a crank time.

try starting for the first time in the afternoon sometime. If it starts quicker, it might have something to do with dew settling on parts in the morning. Ive noticed that when my car is parked in the garage overnight it tends to start better in the morning, even if the car and the outside are the same temperature. my theory is dew. Starting it in the afternoon sometime takes care of the dew thing.

The "ON" position closes the ignition circuit to power the ECU, etc.

The "START" position closes the starter trigger circuit while maintaining the ignition circuit closed.

My thought was that the ignition circuit was flaky while the starter trigger circuit was solid.

As usual, it's a possibility to check out. Can't promisethat it's really the problem.

Thank You fo all the info.
The coil is new in car. (no cost)
I will try a new icm later today. (no cost)
Will also look into the igition switch. Witch looks like part #10 (35130-sm5-003)from honda parts store.
Can some tell me if that is correct part.. Thx ken
