O2 sensor error keeps coming back!
2000 Honda Accord 4 doorEX 4 cyl. ULEV motor. I am having a reoccurring problem related (relatively sure its related) to O2. MIL light came on the other day. Got it scanned at autozone. Gas cap error (cleared the code) I had pulled up 4 feet w/o gas cap on because gas pump was out of service (dumb move I know). Two days after clearing code I got MIL light got it scanned again got P1166 and P1167 Manfacurer Contrl. Fuel air metering for both codes. After investigating a little closer autozone said it was Bank 1 O2 sensor. I took the codes and confirmed it independently. Purchased Bosch O2 sensor. Original purchase cable was a little short and had to take the other end of pigtail off to get them to plug in. Well the code was cleared and upon restart it took 2 min for code to show up again. I was certain I had received the wrong O2 sensor. So I took it back got another (Bosch) with a longer cable. Confirmed the first ) O2 was the correct sensor though (while I was there). Second cable and part was ample to remount the pigtail and still had plenty of slack. Cleared the code. Drove around no error. Getting dark and no MIL light. Called it an evening. Next day (cold morning) started car no error until the end of the driveway. Shook my head, knew I had the right part. Talking to myself I knew I was in the right area as the original sensor would show an error immediately after being cleared and then restarted. Looked online someone else had the same motor ULEV. Did the exact same thing as I did as far as buying Bosch and the short cable then long cable then Honda part. They stated in their blog that finally they bit the bullet and bought the honda part from the dealership and thatmotor required OEM part (there problem was solved). Well I didn't want to hear that $85 vs $185 ( I knew the had me over a barrel) but I too bit the bullet. I drove around that night for about 30 min. No MIL light error. Drove to work the next day 50 mile commute and 5 min from work I was thinking to myself while sitting at the last stop light problem solved perserverance won out. Low and behold the MIL light came on again at the exact same time I was thinking that (if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have none). Checked the codesame error. I did reset the code again and the error has not yet returned but I've on been driving a few miles. I am expecting the code to rear its ugly head again. I should say the car seems to be running a little rich by examining the tailpipe and at a stop light a little bit of a rough idle gas mileage not terrible but has decreased (when bad sensor was in there). No noticeable decrease in power and climbs hills and mountains same as always. As stated above I'm fairly sure I'm in the right area as MIL light stays out a while. Anyone had this problem before? Any suggestions are much appreciated

RE: O2 sensor error keeps coming back!
There are 3 different codes for the sensor, each has a different diagnostic procedure; It would help to know the exactcode.
The emission codes will only reappear after at least 2 'drive cycles'. Whats the rest of the story with the cars maint? Plugs, air filter, oil changed? |
RE: O2 sensor error keeps coming back!
I thought what I gave was the exact code? Is that not correct (P1166 and P1167) I know these are the scan codes but I don't have any emissions codes as I don't have to pass emissions in my area so it may be passing it may not? That was the only error I had. As far as the maintenance... everything is up to date plugs are Bosch Platinum about 1 year old, air filter good not perfect about 6 months old. One thing I know I must change is the cabin filter but I don't see a relation. Not exactly sure where that is but I have the book to look it up. I do as much of the work as I can. I try to know my limitations. This seemed like an easy fix though and initially appeared to resolve the issue. Also since my lastreset I'v put about 70 miles on in 4 different trips and I'm afraid to say it as I might curse a good thing but no mil light. I guess you would have to actually define a drive cycle? Does 70 miles in 4 trips count? I do know there are some diagnostic procedures involve and I have a multimeter but being able to use it with skill, I'm sorry to say I'm sadly lacking.

I should also say I cleaned the throttle body and checked all the vacuum hoses including pcv valve. All seems well in that department.

RE: O2 sensor error keeps coming back!
Sorry didn't see the codes in the original post, this is about the 'heater circuit' in the sensor.
Drive cycle Emission rules don't apply. Take note there is a relay in the schematic [underhood fuse boxI think] |
