Overfilled ATF?

I did a drain/refill of my ATF this weekend (96 Accord 4cyl EX)

I looked at the specs, and it says 2.5 qt for a change and 6.3qt for an overhaul. I drained almost exactly 4 quarts, so that is what I put back in also.

Two questions

1 - Did I overfill it? The dipstick is really awkward to put in and take out, so I don't trust that very much because I am sure that it bangs against the walls of the tube going in/coming out.
2 - If I did overfill it, does it matter? Thanks!

I'd stick to the reading off the dipstick and use that for your reading, it does or can hit the walls but it shouldn't be enough to throw off your reading. Make sure the car is level and check the dipstick 2 or 3 times (wipe it off each time inbetween readings) to see what level it's at.

You didn't say whether the dipstick indicated over-filled before the drain/refill. I would guess yes, unless you have a modified transmission pan. I have run 1/4-1/2 qt over and never had any problems, but wouldn't recommend doing this regularly. Dipstick works OK as long as car is very close to level. Pan is shallow so any tilt is a problem.

good luck

Now there's the understatement of the year!!!! There isn't even a real pan!!! It's the bottom of the tranny casing!!!

BTW - New crush washers is always a good idea to prevent leakage from loosening the bolt. It cost a buck or 2 at the stealership.

ive always thought the point of replacing the crush washer was to avoid stripping the threads...
