Hey guys I have been reading a little bit about this code and just wanted to see if anybody had some new info on it or if it really just means my tranny is dead. I have seen alot of good advise on this web site and would really like some help. I sure can't afford $1500 to $3000 for a new or reman unit. HELP!:(

pull the solenoid off and see if the screen is plugged up, you can also jump power to it and hear it click. Should have a good STRONG click.

p0740= torque converter deteriorization(slippage)....i mourn your loss....

sorry for the double post but where is the solonoid located at and how do I pull it. Sorry I do a bit of mechanic work on the side but never tranny. Also if the tranny is for sure bad if I buy a master rebuild kit will that fix it or are there more serious problems that need to be addressed??? Thanks for the replies

I don't want to be a pessimist, but this code means a hydraulic fault and not an electrical problem w/ lock-up solenoid. I've had this code on my 97 Acura TL for almost 2 yrs. Trans shifts fine, but torque converter lockup will not work. Trans contol unit (TCU) senses slippage between transmission drive and engine (torque converter slip) and when slippage exceeds a certain amount (not clear what limits are but 5-10% seem right), sets code P0740. If trans works OK otherwise, you live w/ the problem or replace/repair the trans. I've replaced the HPU inlet screen, replaced fluid several times, removed and checked LU solenoids, etc but problem remains.

One possible way I've considered to prevent the CEL illuminating due to P0740 is to install larger tires to "fool" the TCU w/ a reduced drive train speed vs. engine speed. This might cause the detected slippage to be low enough to pass the test and keep CEL off. However, the larger tires demand more torque from engine and slippage may increase leading to same problem.

as the torque converter clutch material deteriorates it tends to clog the valve body, solenoids, and fluid passages when bad enough. rebuilding it will not be fun. a new torque converter is about half the cost of a reman tranny anyway.

what is the best price I will probably get stuck paying for a rebuild / rebuilt unit???

You can get one for around 1800 rebuilt and I believe 950 for a used one from japan with less than 40k miles, so they say. Oh yeah, from here:

Mine is from there and I got 18k miles or so and is doing fine. Maybe add a hayden 403 when you do the swap.


edit: oops are u asking about torque converter or the trans?

i'd highly recommend both the torque converter and transmission, plus cleaning the transmission cooler(in the radiator)
