Please help: 1993 Accord EX intermittent AC air conditioning
 

1993 EX w/ approx. 246,000 miles.

Air conditioning has become intermittent. It will work for awhile, then stop (blows out only ambient temperature air). Then it may start working again. Happens regardless of engine speed, vehicle speed/driving conditions, etc.

A/C shop checked, found only a blown fuse; they replaced fuse, but it made no difference.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Did they test the pressure in the system?

When the a/c is turned on, both fans in the engine bay should turn on. Also, watch the clutch plate that is outside of the compressor pulley. It should not spin with the pulley when the a/c is turned off. It should spin with the pulley when the a/c is turned on.

So, start the car, turn on the a/c. When the a/c stops working, tell us what happens to the clutch plate and the fans in the engine bay.

when a/c stops blowing cold ,, compressor clutch not engaged are both fans running ??

if fans work,, the issue is on the positive path of the system ( relay, clutch coil, gap too big ,poor connection )
if fans do not work most likely the ground path of the system ( thermo switch in the evap, high pressure switch, control panel )

This happened to my 92 Accord last year. It would blow ice cold then all of a sudden it would get warm even with the a/c light on. Then all of a sudden it would get ice cold again no matter what condition. My shop found that the a/c switch (eletrical) was going bad. They jumped the switch to confirm it and the a/c compressor stayed on. After a few days of this , it confirmed that the switch was bad. Purchased a new switch from Honda and it fixed it! You can leave it jumped, but if you run out of refrigerant with the switch jumped it can ruin the compressor. Good luck!!
