97 Accord LX

Is there a light for the gear shift selector in the center console?

Before I take it all apart to see, I thought I would ask here first. With the headlights on, it's completely black. There is the indicator in the dash, but I would think there should be one at the selector as well.

Yes.....there is a light in there.

OK, looks like I'll be getting in there to take a look at it.

The climate control lights were out too, but a hit to the dash brought them back to life.....LOL

Also on my list is a transmission flush...........car has 156000 miles on it, so I'm sure it's a good time to do it.
Any pointers on doing it?

I did my wife's '03 CRV, is it the same process?

Yes, drain and fill. My TWO CENTS - please only use Honda Trans fluid.

Drain bolt is on the pass side of the car....the round bolt with the 3/8 square hole, insert the 3/8 ratchet and remove.....clean it, it will have junk all over it so don't panic. Install, refill, run car thru all the gears, check level and enjoy :)

So you only have to drain and fill once?

On the CRV, I did that process 3 times. With driving about 10 miles between each time.

I only use Honda fluid, well aware of that. I know the drain plug has a magnet on it, so that won't freak me out at all.

For a trans you are "unsure of", yes three drain and fills would be my suggestion - you set a good base line. If the trans service is up to date and known to have been changed then one drain and fill when called for is fine. I personally cut the service manual time/milage in half for mine....again this is just me.

Yeah, I have no idea of the previous service. I know the timing belt/water pump was done about 15000 miles ago, and that's about it. The tranny shifts good, but could be smoother.......so a fluid change can't hurt. At 156000 it could use it either way even if it was done a while ago.

You might want to drain the fluid into a clean pan or container, & judge the condition of the fluid. Then decide if you want to do multiple drain-fill cycles. You can only drain about 1/3 of the total fluid, but if that drained fluid looks nice & clean, you can just leave it at that.
