Default Radiator Fan

96 accord ex auto- Both fans work, but the radiator fan is only running when the a/c is turned on. I replaced all of the temperature sensors and if I jump the connector on any of the sensors the fan turns on but its not turning on by itself and I dont know why.

I'm easy to confuse so sorry for this.

I'm going to assume this is a 4cyl.

BOTH fans should run if the AC is on, are they?

If you jump the wires to thermo a (t-stat housing) with the key on, do BOTH fans run?

I know this is about a 4th gen but the 5th is not that much different.

yes both fans run if the ac is on and if you jump the sensor on the thermostat they both run. They just dont kick on by themselves.

It could be your fan relay (in your fuse box). I had the same problem with my 97 and I replaced the fan relay for like $14 and it fixed my problem!

I really don't understand why they wont turn on by themselves. I'll idle in traffic and watch the needle go up past the halfway point and nothing. Then I just turn on the A/C and it goes right down to normal. It makes no sense that if I jump the posts on the connector that the fan starts right up and the sensors are brand new so why wouldnt they just complete the circuit when they get hot like they are supposed to?

Thermoswitch A controls fans engaging when AC is off. If fans are not running when temp goes above normal, this thermoswitch is late in closing, even if it's new.

good luck

Thermo-switch-A is supposed to switch the fans on after the temperature gets a bit above normal. In my experience that's maybe 55% or 60% on the gauge. Long way from the top red mark, but noticably higher than the normal 40% where it stays while driving.

With a well-working cooling system, I've had trouble getting the fans to run by themselves except on a warm day in summer. You might have to put something like an old blanket in front of the grille & let it idle for awhile. Of course watch the gauge & be prepared to remove the blanket or turn off the engine.

Not true. Read above posts by other users and this thread, which was also referred to above by poorman212.
