Rough Idle when AC turned on
Hi folks,
My wifes 2000 Honda Accord SE has started to get rough idle when the AC is turned on. I have had the car scanned and nothing comes up, and revs appeared to remained the same. I have also replaced a weak battery and had the charging system checked but still no improvement. But I remember a few years ago someone else went through the same problem of getting no codes or anything on the scans and ended up replacing numerous expensive sensors, like the O2 sensors unecessarily only to find out that it was one specific sensor that the dealership didn't even think about. So, does anyone remember the post or know what sensor could be causing the problem without throwing a code. Thanks in advance F.O.G. |
are all the mounts ok?? how much does the rpm drop /?
|
Could the problem be a vibration from the AC and cooling fans and not the engine idle as you mention the RPMs don’t drop.
|
Thanks guys.
I'll have a look at the AC & fans and hopefully that's what it is, but I still can't find that thread from years ago that had the info on sensor that was out of whack but didn't throw a code. I just typed engine vibrates when AC turned on and behold a honda civic forum came up where someone had the same problem in a 99 civic and he claimed the AC compressor was the culprit. Could it be the compressor? |
Check out a couple things (just to rule them out).
1 - Check for wobbly pulley on the compressor. That doesn't mean a bad compressor, just a bent pulley. I had that happen on a Jetta (years ago). 2 - Check for the radiator fans hitting their shrouds. That might make enough noise & vibration. |
Thanks guys but it appears to be none of the above. When the car is running in neutral and you turn the AC on there is no vibration but if it's in gear and stopped and you turn the AC on then it vibrates.
So it appears to be a load issue, so I'll keep trying to figure out what's going on. Thanks F.O.G. |
just for grins and giggles, try cleaning around the throttle plate area with carb cleaner and a toothbrush. Also blast out the screen on the IACV.

But I'm still chasing the problem and ran a load test on the battery. It appears that something is drawing down the battery because if I leave the car for an extended period of a couple of days the voltage will drop down to around 12.2 which isn't normal. I also ran the volts at start which came up well past the minimum of 10 then did a volt check with the car running and got 14.5 which means the battery is getting a charge. I then tried the voltage with the AC on and got 13.5 but then it started jumping all over the place so we tested the amperage. When the blower motor was on it read 50 amps and the volts were unstable but as soon as we shut off the blower motor it dropped to 21 amps and the volts stabilized. I can't find anything about how many volts the Blower motor should draw or any reason for the erratic voltage and high amp drain when it' s running. So it would be appreciated that if anyone else has run into this problem maybe they have a solution? F.O.G. |
Did you find any solution for this particular problem? I drive 2007 honda accord ex-l. I am facing the same problem. Mechanics are saying that I need new motor mounts.

Hello
My girlfriends’ Accord , a 2001 V6 has a similar symptom. I hadn’t driven it for a bit and when I did I found it shook a lot when the A/C came on.. With these Honda cars the cooling fans come on often when the A/C clutches kick in. When she got the car I noticed that and though these fans are going to wear out sooner than they need to. So the steps I took were as follows.. 1st I wasn’t crazy about messing with compressor so I went to check the fans for being out of balance.. 2nd The cheapest route to follow is to unhook stuff, one by one and see who shakes most.. I went the relay route but found unplugging each fan was safer. I unplugged the main fan first and found the shroud was shaking less and the motor Shook by the same amount it did when the A/C clutch kicks in. Then I re plugged the main and unplugged the condenser fan. Same symptoms, Shroud shaking less & motor shaking due to increase load. .. 3rd Unplug both fans and keeping hand on motor to check for shaking as A/C clutch kicks in and out. ..So I got back in the car with fans unhooked to check the shake you’d feel behind the wheel. I was less for sure so I went to get scrapper fans. At this point i'd found the motor shook at load change and smoothed out as it kept running so i went the fan route. 4th step (with everything turned off) you tug on the fans, back and forth to check the fan motors for end play. The main fan had some, the condenser fan moved in and out a bit less.. Plus I needed to feel what a worn ones felt before I went to the scrappers and brought home an equally worn pair of fans. This morning before work I’ve change the motor on the main fan and the condenser fan and off she drives, no complaints. SO FAR.. I came home with a spare A/C clutch. I’ve yet to check the A/C pulley for wobble. The clutch is functioning fine off/on .The clutch, on V6 is behind the frame and hard to get at. The bearing on it could be wearing, but you’d hear it before you feel it on these things. Hope this info is helpful to someone & can save some time. . Jim. |
