Rustproofing 2007 EX-L
 

Just picked up my new EX-L last week and joined the forum today; this is a crosspost from the newbie group. We have a harsh winter climate here and there is *lots* of road salt used on the streets and highways from about November to April. I declined the dealer rustproofing thinking I could always have a commercial rustproofing treatment done later, but since then I have read conflicting advice on whether this is a good idea or not. (ie. Something about voiding the Honda corrosion/perforation warranty). Some have suggested that the car already comes factory treated and adding an after-market treatment might actually be harmful. Does anyone know where I can get some good Honda-approved information on this?

how long do you plan to own it? i wouldnt do it.

it would not be harmful or void the honda factory warranty if you add some extra undercoating.. but even with that rust will find its way ,, you need to wash the car often ..

or do as i did ,when i lived in wisconsin ,, buy a beater to drive in the winter months , just as long as the heater works good ;)

I hope to keep the car for about 8-10 years. New cars here typically start to show signs of rusting at 5 years.
Why wouldn't you do it?

I recently moved from sunny southern cali to the wintery part of the country. I have been here about two winters and wanted to protect my undercarriage with some Rhino lining. Anybody have any thoughts about under coating the car in wintery/salty roads? Anyone have any thought on using rhinolining as an undercoating?

i wouldnt do it because i dont trust anyone when it comes to that sort of stuff. by the time it rolls around that something might rust out, good luck getting something out of it. i would just wash it once a week including underbody during the winter.

Here is a direct quote from the Rhinolining web site:

I was thinking about something like Vital, Krown or OilGard; however after carefully reading my warranty manual it says to not add any aftermarket rustproofing. I just hate the thought of watching my new Accord rust though. The amount of salt that gets used on the roads here is unbelievable..

The problem with many coatings of that kind is they're so thick they can block off the drains that are incorporated into the bottom of doors & other places. When the drains are blocked off, moisture can accumulate & make it worse. It's a nasty problem.

I have heeard of that happening as well...
