Shifting to 3rd gear grinds
I have a 1998 Honda Accord DX 2dr Hatchback that has 250,000 miles on it with a 5 speed manual transmission. When I shift from 2nd to 3rd I hear a grinding of gears.
I've adjusted my clutch so it disengages the clutch totally when the clutch pedal is depressed normally. Same issue. Then... I replaced the (transmission) gear oil (it was low) with 85w-140 and it has reduced the grinding into 3rd gear somewhat. Also, if I let the engine RPM go down to below 2000 RPM and then shift up to 3rd gear I don't get any crunching/grinding sounds. All shifting into any other gear is just fine. Any suggestions? email J.R. at jr_sanford@yahoo.com if you've got any solutions. Thanks, J.R. Chehalis, WA |
RE: Shifting to 3rd gear grinds
What year, trim, motor etc are we talking about? We can assume that it's an accord but we need a little more information than that to answer this properly... And unless I am mistaken I don't recall any of the accords using gear oil in the transmission....
Put the car info in your signature and it will be there everytime you post |

RE: Shifting to 3rd gear grinds
Double clutching will allow you to avoid grinding until you fix the synchronizer. As you shift you pause in neutral, release the clutch, re-engage the clutch and shift up. Not exactly speed shifting, but easier on the nerves.
good luck |
