Side View Mirror Replacement Glass will NOT pop in!
Purchased this glass https://www.ebay.com/itm/FOR-1990-20...EAAOSwR8lc-cDA. The old cracked up piece came out fine.
For the life of me, I could not get the new piece to fit in the plastic properly. Went to a windshield place and they wanted $25 to just glue it in. Seemed like a lot. I already had the old glass out and it was all cleaned up. I said all I needed to do was pop it in, but it wouldn't fit. He said it was because of the double sided tape, that's what was making it not go in. So after some googling, I went to O'Reilly and got a tube of Permatex Black Rubber Sealant and thought all would be done now. It still wouldn't go in. If I put the bottom part in first, it fits great up to the top- where it won't go in. If I put it snug into the top first, can't get it in at the bottom no matter what. Finally broke it trying......not happy about that at all.
Before I reorder and try again, thought I would ask what the deal is here. It seems like it should just fit right in, but it won't no matter what. I did not take the mirror apart at all to try to work with it at a better angle. With all of it on the car, I was just trying to get the glass on. Seemed super simple and clear.
After it broke, I thought I could at least get the pieces on for now (it broke in 4 clean pieces) with it being like a puzzle instead of one whole piece. It STILL doesn'r fit at all, no matter what, even when I try putting in one piece at a time. The replacement mirror was an exact match in size to the one that came out. I laid it out and it was not bigger. (The old glass was glued onto paper and came out together, shattered but still attached to the paper on the back for the most part. Is that original?)
I am thinking there is no way to get it in without heating the plastic molding somehow? I tried to do it a little with a lighter at the bottom when I put it into the top first, to no avail. I don't know if I get that plastic off somehow without breaking it more, if I may be able to get it in flat on a table and then reinstall the whole thing? Or if I had whatever tool I need to heat the plastic mold- what do I heat it with? I don't see how it will stay warm/pliable long enough to get it fit in, but I don't see anyway it is going to fit in there. I guess the windshield guy knows the trick....so posting here to see if anyone knows about this glass task. Thanks

If it doesn't fit the first time then the part is bad. The mirror should just lay in there.
Before adding silicone adhesive of the adhesive pad put the mirror in to see if it's going to work. DNA is known for some of there parts not being designed correctly. Get one from a reputable company that mainly specializes in car glass

Does anyone have a brand purchased recently that "just lay in there" with all of the ease I read this task should be? The glass I had appeared to be the exact same size when I laid them down together. It looks to me like the edge is a kind of "lip." So it makes sense that it may have needed some bit of skill to fit it ie; use of heat perhaps. It does not seem like it is the level of actually "snaps" in - but it did seem to act somewhat like a lip with the one that was the size "....if only I could get it in just right."
Thank you very much.

The Permatex Black Rubber I read about and got for the first one did NOT seem like it would hold if there was no structural help from the lip holding it in. It was very watery and did not seem like adhesive at all. Are you talking about plain 100 percent silicone here? Or is it some kind of silicone based adhesive? And is it fine for use with mirrors and won't erode the surface of back of mirror if applied directly to it? The little stick on squares included do not seem like they will hold it at all. Thanks.
Just get some loctite glass glue and you'll be fine. If you want silicone then get permatex silicone adhesive. It's more a preference thing. Which ever you want to use

The glass looks like it only actually touches the frame in two small places in the middle. The rest is open spaces. I thought maybe that is why people like silicone? Because you can fill in some of those spaces and get a seal at more places than just the two near the center on each side where there are two kind of flat spots that make contact. Will Loctite hold it with just those two points of contact? I can take a picture tomorrow when the sun is out.
