Default Slight Ringing when going uphill....

in addition to the ringing when going up some hills with light acceleration, I also notice a rattling when accelerating on the freeway. Not all the time, but when it happens, it's very noticeable.

The high pitched ringing is very consistent when going up hill around 25 - 35 mph with light throttle. It seems to go away if I let up on the throttle or if I increase the throttle a great deal. It seems to be in a sort of sweet spot.

Any ideas.....?

I can get you information that could help you help me diagnose. I also have PMScan if we need to get some Long and Short Term fuel trims.

I'm not sure how to diagnose here, so please help.

thank you,

J

It is difficult to diagnose sounds over the web. Can you describe the sound better? Do you have an idea of where the sound is coming from?

It might be something like exhaust that's barely touching something, only when the engine is torquing just the right amount. You might be able to duplicate the sound by holding the brakes & applying a little gas (with the transmission in gear).

The sound is like a ringing......very high pitched....I would call it "pinging" if I knew what pinging sounded like. But to me, pinging describes this sound pretty accurately.

So, I would like to pursue the possibility that I'm running leaning or rich for that matter. I am using a bit more gas than I did a few years back.

Could I take pictures of my 50,000 mile old plugs and post?

Could I get you some real time data from OBD that would help?

I'll perform any test that you deem important.

Thank you,

J

Pinging is a rattling, chatter that occurs abruptly under load and stops as soon as load is removed. It can be caused by lack of EGR injection at moderate load. Suggest cleaning the EGR ports and distribution paths.

good luck

I get the rattling you're talking about on the freeway with a certain amount of load.....and if i let off it goes away.

I removed the EGR valve and it wasn't gunked up as far as I could see.

Any cleaning instructions or thoughts?

There is an EGR valve and and EGR port that is part of the intake manifold. You may want to remove the intake manifold and clean out the EGR port. There is a TSB for 98-02 V6 EGR cleaning. I think the 03 setup is similar.

Remove the intake? Wow....I think that might be a bit of a job for me. I wish I could pay someone in Orange County to do it for me besides the dealer.

Are you thinking this is the problem?

It's difficult to be certain lack of EGR is your problem because blocked ports may prevent any EG flow. Consequently, there's no negative test (cut off EG) to test the theory that lack of EG (high combustion temps) is leading to pinging.

I only brought this up because Ive seen EG restriction cause pinging (not on Hondas, but rather a Suburban V8).

You could have an emissions check to see what NOX is doing. High NOX is indicative of low EG dilution.

good luck

I helped my friend with his 99 V6, and it wasn't too bad to remove.
