Spark plug tubes

Hello all.

I have a question about the spark plug tubes for an 06 3.0 V6. I was in the process of doing the 100,000 mile service, when i started changing the spark plugs i got to the last one and the coil pack broke off in the tube and i cannot get the broken part out. It appears to be rusted or fused in there, i've tried everything to remove it myself....nothing is working.
My question is. Are the tubes removable? I've read that they are part of the head and are not removable, i figured this would be the place to ask.

Thanks in advance

Eric

As far as the parts drawings go, they are "part of" the head, but it sure looks like they are literally a separate part that is pressed or welded into the head. You might manage to pull the tube out from the head, but I'm guessing that'll damage it & I don't know how you would get it back in & sealed.

But if you remove the valvecover, you might have a little better access to break up & remove the remainder of the coil.

There are extended length needle nose pliers that may be able to reach/grasp the stuck boot(?).

You should be able to fashion a stab/retrieve tool from stiff wire, bending wire back and sharpening end to a point to penetrate boot.

good luck

Thanks for the reply.
Ive tried everything i can think of to get the remainder out of the tube. I removed the valve cover to get better access and it seems as though everything is fused together in there. I tried removing the tube when the valve cover was off but it is in there really good. It goes to the mechanic on Wednesday, hopefully they can get the tube out without removing the head.

You mentioned you tried everything. Did you try spraying penetrating oil like PB Blaster to loosen it?

By tube, Do you mean spark plug wire tube extension and end boot?

See following video for a Toyota w/ similar setup.

No way to pull these manually.

I'm thinking aftermarket parts w/ too tight boot fit?

good luck

Yep. Tried the PB Blaster. TexasHonda, that is a good vid but there is no room for those types of pliers. Its all original parts with 102,000 miles. The bad thing is the head of the coil pack broke off just below the top of the tube so it is hard to get a grip with anything. Last night i put several screws in it and rigged up a small puller, all it would do is shear the head off the screws...This thing is in there good!!

If you search "stuck spark plug removal" on youtube, you'll find several additional videos. I found one on Honda spark plug tubes.

From your post the tube extension and boot are attached, so above video may have a solution. It also appears there is a similar commercial tool available.

good luck

Just an update for everyone. The shop had to pull the tube out of the head (so they do come out) He drilled through the tube and used a puller to yank the tube out. 3.5 hours, new tube sealed and pressed in, new coil pack and $240.00 later back on the road. He said the coil was melted to the pug tube.
