Speedo and Cruise Control not working
 

I recently bought a '94 Accord and the speedo, odometer, tripmeter, and cruise control don't work. A local shop said the speedo needs to be replaced, but after they tried to charge me double to what another shop charged to replace the compressor I'm not sure if I should believe them or not. I'm hoping it's just the VSS, but I don't want to buy the part if that's not it. CEL doesn't come on, but there is a "maintenance required" indicator I guess that appears yellow and is on the speedo, but doesn't light up or anything.

Any way I can check or should I just take it to a trustworthy shop?

Thanks in advance, I searched and didn't see anyone with exactly my issue so I made a post.

Forgot to mention I've checked the 10A fuse and it's fine.

In the DIY section there are testing procedures for the VSS, by the description that is the first thing I would test.
