Speedometer problem..

HI,
I have 91 Honda Accord lx/4dr/auto. For the last several months, the speedo meter stopped working, the pointer stays at 0MPH all through the driving. As far as the transmission, the gears shift properly and everything's fine. Occasionally the speedometer moves and rests back. After searching several forums and after also making sure that Cruise control also not working, I came to know that VSS(Vechicle Speed Senso) could be the culprit.

I would like to know whether replacing VSS is something that I can fix myself and if so, can anyone help me locate it inside the hood? A picture would be really helpful.

thanks in advance,
TZ

HI,
Thanks for your reply. I've just checked for the VSS at the location pointed inside the picture but I am unable find the speed sensor. I know it has a triangular metal plate with screws at it's corners along with electrical wires plugged on to its surface. Can you please tell me if the picture belong to the appropriate model?(Honda Accord '91 LX 4-dr)

thx
TZ

The location is somewhere between the throttle body and the distributor, but it is pretty low, since it is bolted on the transmission.

If you look at just the transmission, it is bolted on the side that is nearest the engine and the firewall.

that is for sure the problem. i just changed mine. look below the throttle body down on the transmission. it is difficult to reach, and is held on by 2 bolts. dont loose the little key that goes inside of it.

The picture that g22cd5 posted is a little strange. It looks like a '98-'02 Accord but the VSS is in about the same position. The headlight, air filter & intake look different in a '91.

It shows the VSS in the right spot, but you CANNOT see it from that view. It's as if the engine & tranny were transparent & you're looking through them. In reality the VSS is down low, behind the engine.

PAHonda's picture is as if you were standing alongside the right-front tire & looking into the engine compartment. Again, the air intake & a few other things are "transparent".

Hope the VSS fixes it for ya...my 96 EX,the speedo works sometimes, and other times it dont. The cruise, doesnt seem to work..I replaced the VSS and the problem is still there...so I know it has to be inside the cluster where the problem is.

Thanks you all for your suggestions. Today after some considerable effort, I replaced the VSS myself and speedometer is working again like charm. But the fix is a bit hard and has to be careful while unscrewing and putting them back though.

thanks
TZ
