Default question about 2008 accord??

Hi,
I am new to this site and would like to ask a question. My son bought a brand new 2008 accord. Has about 20,000 miles on it. He says he hears some type of noise only when he turns left or right, sort of like a scrapping sound, but nothing when he steps on the brake. No sounds at any other time other then turning. He took it to the dealer today and they say it is the rear brakes and suggested some kind of work be done. I got upset and called the mechanic, he told me on the new hondas, the rear brakes usually go between 15 and 20 thousand miles. Is that true and will he have to have a brake job every 6 months or so? He will go elsewhere to get another opinion and get it fixed but I wonder if what they told us is true?
Thanks for any help

I HAVE heard people talk about rear brakes wearing out faster on the newer Accords, but 20k miles sounds pretty early. Lifespan of the brakes will vary a TREMENDOUS amount depending on driving habits, hills, traffic, all kinds of reasons. There's never been any way to put that down to a certain number of miles.

Now... Is it an Accord EX = rear disk brakes?
If it's an Accord LX with rear drum brakes then I'd really question the story.

It's an LX, so I will pursue it. I see on this site there is a law firm supposedly investigating; he already called them.
thanks

I just looked at parts drawings... 2008 LX has rear disk brakes, so what I said about rear drum brakes doesn't apply. Still, I've heard several different stories about the short lifespan of the rear brakes. Don't know much other that that.
