Synthetic 10W40 in 93 Accord w/ 5speed

I'm the original owner of a 93 EX coupe with 305K miles on it. I've been just using GTX 10W40 in the tranny up until now but the thing is getting a little cruchy shifting when cold out (still shifts fine warm). Is anyone using synthetic 10W40 in their MT and will it cause any problems if I do so?

I'm a bit overdue for a timing belt as well and I think I'm going to try that when it warms up a bit, so I'll be back. Looks like some good info on this site.

I haven't hear of many that use motor oilfor their MTF. Most will probably tell you to use Genuine Honda MTF (Have you tried it?) I have also read good things about Redline MTF. i will probably use Redline when I change the MTF in my LX.

Honda didn't begin 'making' their own MTF until sometime after 1995. They called for 10w-30 engine oil before that.

I've heard that synthetic engine oil isn't so good - it can be too slippery. The synchros are really little clutches, and they NEED friction to operate.

Yeah, I used 10W30 as that is what my owners manual called for.

As for using synthetic, I wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not. I know a friend changed his Jeep over to all synthetic and everything started leaking. As of right now no leaks on the Honda so I'd like to keep it that way if I can.

Think I'll stick to GTX, as I already have some in the garage........

I used 10w-30 GTX in my '95 Integra tranny for several years before switching to Honda MTF. The Honda fluid was a bit better, but if anything is already worn, it's not gonna do anymagic.

yeah, I'm just holding this car together as long as I can. I'm the only one who drives it so I just baby it along. I can live with it crunching a little bit every now and then. It's a whole lot better than the transmission in my old Jeep!

I'm using the Motul synthetic gear oil in my CB7. Changed to this oil at about 210,000km, now at 250,000. No leaks before or after, still no leaks. The Motul oil resulted in a noticably slicker / smoother shifting action, but I couldn't tell you whether this is because of the particular oil, or just that the oil was new as opposed to old.

There have been zero issues using the Motul, no problems with synchro function or whatever. This might be different if using a synthetic engine oil which may not have additives designed for the synchro operation, which I believe is the case with specialised synthetic gearbox oil.

Redline also does specialised synthetic gearbox I believe. Redline has avery good reputation, but you do pay a lot of money for it (the Motul isn't that cheap either, but way less than Redline). I've heard the Honda MTF works very well, which shouldn't be a surprise, probably the cheapest good option. Your crunching may be associated with the oil thickness being a 10W40 where Honda reccomends a 10W30. Could be why theshift improves as the oil warms and thins a little.

Hey Tech Man, is that what your dealership uses when they change up the fluids ?

nice pic! we use only genuine honda fluid, so yes, we use honda mtf. honda recently updates the mtf. the new stuff has a white cap on the bottle. it takes about 10 miles of stop and go driving to really see the difference if it can help.
