Tachometer Quits - Can Novice Determine Why?

My tachometer decided to up and leave, no reason given.

According to prior posts re this problem, the connection inside the distributor might be loose. Is this something I can/should check myself, or do I need specialized tools or knowledge?

Thanks in advance - knowledge is power, especially when it comes to fixing your car.

First, check for loose/dirty/corroded pins in the wiring harness plug outside of the distributor.

Take off the distributor cap, rotor, & the spark shield (#5). Check for loose wires on the ignitor (#7).

Wiring harness plug

Not sure exactly what I'm looking for here - i.e. "the wiring harness plug outside of the distributor." Where on your diagram is this located?

Thanks,

Robert

I was talking about the multi-wire plugs just outside of the distributor, where the car's wiring harness plugs into the distributor. The body of the distributor is #4, those plugs are kinda visible at the top-right of that part.

It might even be one or more wires cut or torn in that neighborhood?

If that doesn't solve the problem, then go inside the distributor to check the connections at the ignitor.

Then to check further, the wires have to go from there into the dashboard & to the back of the instrument cluster. If you're unlucky, there's a break in the wiring somewhere (anywhere) in-between.
