Tachometer and speedometer broken
 

2000 Accord, 4 cyl, stick shift.

Tachometer is totally dead and speedometer is reading 40 mph as soon as you start the car. It does not change if you start driving.

Does any one know if the inputs for tachometer and speedometer come from the same place?

1. For the Accord 4 cylinder with manual transmission, the speedometer gets it's signal/pulses from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Does your Check Engine Light work and is the light on all the time?

For info. only: 4 cylinder with A/T gets the signal/pulses from PCM/ECM.

2. For both 4 cylinders with A/T or M/T, the tachometer gets its signal/pulses from the PCM/ECM.

Just to clarify, the CEL was not on?
Also, after reading your response I decided to pull out my instrument cluster and try it out in a friend's accord just to make sure that the cluster itself is at fault.
It is. Then I opened the back and looked at the circuit board to see if there are any obvious defects. The board look good, there were no burn marks or cracked solder.

I called the local junkyard and the cluster is about $75. Would you know if the cluster from the other Accord is going to read the correct mileage (my mileage) since the input comes from the PCM/ECM?

Correction...............................Just to clarify, the CEL was not on!!!

The odometer reading is part of the instrument cluster.
