Thinking of buying a 2002 Honda Accord EX for daily driving

2 door Honda Accord 2002 EX, automatic, 98k miles, 4/5 body, trying to talk the guy down to around $5000 (he wants about $6500).
From my understanding, these cars came with a vtec 150hp engine. Not looking for performance really, but I dont mind the 150hp and a 4 cylinder engine. I already have a V6 FWD (my MX3) and its a pain to work on at times. The KLZE swap will do for me.

So anyway, im posting here for some advice. What are known problems with Accords at this mileage?
What is the name of this engine in the 2002 EX model? Is it a D16 or something?
I am good with working on cars, but I am a full time student now and am NOT looking for a tuner or a lemon car.
Just a daily driver tank Honda that will last me a while.

EDIT: I just read that 2002 Honda Accord come with bad automatic transmissions? Is this true? Been hearing alot of stories about people's transmissions dieing on them

Can't tell you specifically about the 2002 but for my 2 cents worth. I have a 2001 Accord EX, 5 speed, 4 cyl, not sure what the engine it but it works. I"ve got 210,000 on it so far and basically haven't had to do anything to it besides routine maintenance, oil, brakes/rotors, timing belt/water pump at 100K (timing belt #2 getting put in next week, not supposed to wait til 100K but i like to live on the edge), absolutely no issues with it at all. The majority of that 210K has been highway driving but the last 20K or so are a mix (my daily commute went from 110miles a day to 20).

Again I can't give you specifics on the 2002 but figure a 2001 should be pretty close.

2001 & 2002 are nearly identical. You guys both have the same engine F23A1 (unless you're in California where it might be a ULEV-VTEC). (D-series is a Civic engine)

Manual trans is bulletproof. Automatic is fragile. I don't like automatics anyway, so I don't know too much more than that.

Timing belt is due at about 100k miles, so be prepared for that expense.

Do some more reading on this!!! VERY IMPORTANT!

I owned a 1998 Accord EX coupe with a V6 automatic transmission and it failed and went out on me, cost me $2600 for a new one, ehh, sucks man. Especially if this is going to be your daily driver.

I don't know how much experience you have with cars, but listen and feel the tranny when you test drive it and if there's ANY discrepancies make sure you take note of them, and might want a mechanic to look.

But over all, do some more research into the trannies and then decide if it's worth it or not. :/

Just my 2 cents! GL!
