Thumping sound except when braking/speeding up

My wife's 07 Accord SE, 5sp manual & 4 cyl, has started to make a light thumping sound when she is driving at a steady speed. As she accelerates or begins to brake, the sound stops. It starts doing it again as soon as she takes her foot off the brakes or gets back to a steady speed. She mentioned it while it was in for an inspection. They noticed that her front pads are worn but the rotors look good. They were trying to talk her into new pads and rotors to fix the problem. She said no because she knew that I could do the brake job cheaper. I'm going to do the front brake job this weekend since the pads are really worn but it still stop smoothly and quietly. Has anyone had a similar problem? Was it brake related??

I had a strange thumping vibration, not so much a sound. Turned out to be a belt separating in one of the tires.

Since you're doing the brakes anyway, wait & see if that does it. Right now I can't think of anything else.

I'm having EXACTLY the same problem...

Did you ever find anything that resolved this issue?

I can't explain this but all the lug nuts were loose on one of her wheels. It would be easy to blame the guy who did the state inspection on her car but I won't... or maybe when her tires were rotated...
