Timing Belt Worry
Hey guys
i got a 2000 accord coupe with a inline4 ulev vtec engine with SRI and Exhust. Anyway i got 150 thousand miles on it and iam telling my brother that we need to change the timing belt and water pump. He says its fine since nothing it worng with the car. PLus he syas we keep up with the mantinece and stuff by religiously changing the oil every 3,000. He said at 200thousand he will change it. I keep telling him thats way to long since to be honest we beat on that car alot. But my dad has a 91 accord which has 275,000 miles with all oringal parts and it stills runs great. So my question to you guys is do you think i have a chance of this timing belt lasting till 200,000 and if it does will it damnge anything since it will prb be low on threads. And also i heard if you dont change it that it will damnge the engine when it barkes. And there no point in rebulding the motor since it cost to much, so if it does break then i might get a h22. Anyone here ever heard of a timing belt lasting 200,000miles? Any comments would be greatly appeciated. |

You can inspect the belt all you want, it's going to look good until about 1/2 hour before it breaks. That's an interference engine, so when the timing belt breaks, the pistons can hit the valves. |

You're gonna be stuck in the water for a while if that timing belt breaks while out and about. like Blake said, these engines are the interference kind, which means that when the belt breaks, your valves are gonna stay open and get pounded on by your pistons. a broken timing belt almost guarantees 4 bent valves. a little preventative maintenence wont hurt anybody. I say replace the timing belt(definately),water pump, and while your in there the balance shaft belt, power steering belt and compressor belt. The timing belt is supposed to be serviced every 70,000 miles.

I would get on that, i think its recommended around 100,000 or so, and its well worth the money

As people have said before: Even when you're sitting at an idle that belt is still going around and causing some wear. So you've got more wear on that belt that just mileage.... It's one of those things, some people can run 300,000 miles on it and never have a problem, others only make it to 100,000 and then it breaks, not to mention the wear on the water pump, pulleys and seals, Just like everyone else says change that belt and play it safe. Or don't you might make it another 200,000 miles or you might make it another 20 miles. Your guess is as good as mine!

I would like to add to this and say that whoever is telling you that you can go 200,000 without replacing at least the timing belt (but good luck finding somone that will do JUST THAT) is a F***ing idiot. dont play games with an investment as large as a car, replace it NOW.

if u like to gamble go to a casino odds are better...u might win, but in this case ur sure to lose. sorry cant be any more clear. u said it urself...u beat on it. only way to avaoid expense is trade it in. and see what they will give u. and then u look at what u have to spend on a new one. after that the check basically writes itself...by the way its not money lost ever to invest in a honda. they are fuel efficient and reliable. that alone pays u back and for the repair. u need to sit down and fig weather u just wnat a new car.

When that belt breaks, is he willing to pay the $4K for a new engine? |

Change the belt and pump asap. By the way, in Europe Honds recommend changing the timing belt and tensioner pulleys at 72,000 miles. The belts are good for about 100k miles but you can get the tensioners breaking early which is nasty! The water pump will be near end of life at 200 K .too.

Pay a little now, ( at your convenience), or pay a lot later, (and possibly at a most in-opportune time). As I understand it - valve train damage from belt breakage went out with the late 80's/early 90's vehicles. |

It deoesnt matter if you have a '56 or an '06 vehicle of any make or model, if it jumps time then you are up the proverbial sh*t creek without a paddle.

Thx everyone for the comments, your all right and i agree with you, iam gonna change it along with water pump and and just get vavle adjustment on it. Now just gotaa give my bigger brother a beating :):D

Here's some PERSONAL experience. I bought a Ford Ranger with 80,000 miles (4 cyl). Never had a car with a timing belt before that so didn't give it a thought. The belt broke at 85.000 and left me stranded. Good education. So now, when my '93 plymouth Sundance with V6 hit 90,000, I changed the belt. People said to change the water pump too, but I said "it's fine". A couple months later the water pump went out and I had to do the whole job over. I think this time I learned better.

i actually had my timing balancer belt and my timining belt disintegrate on me, i was coming home from school one day a few years back and my friends wanted to go out but i decided to get my car home quick cause i felt a huge power lose and it didnt sound right, luckily home was 2 min away, and once i got it in the garage and took a look at it, i noticed nothing wrong, atleast until i tried to restart it and it wouldnt even turn over, and smelled a **** load of gas...anyway i finally narrowed it down to a timing belt issue, and just to give u a heads up, i read somewhere either my Haynes Manual or an online How To, and it said if you have an engine lift, replacing the timing belt that way is much easier, and boy do i wish i had that, cause these cars are defenitely made by small Jap hands, no offense, cause my hands are too big for this car, so a few weekends later of workin for hours straight of tryin just to get everything off to get to the belts i finally got to em, and finally got everything back running right, and of course like an idiot forgot to change the water pump, and this was all occuring at 160,000 miles, so im sure i will be screwed for a water pump on that one...TDC is important too when u change it, so pay attention to what ur doin and good luck cause it is defenitely a pain in the arse...
Damn u Honda for not making it a "Timing Chain"...those things last forever... |
