Torque converter?

Just bought a 95 accord ex with a 2.2lit 4cylinder and automatic trans. just had complete tuneup with timing belt and waterpump. problem is driving at highway speed in o/d the tach and engine jump 200 to 300 rpm. is this a lock up torque converter or something else? any help would be greatly appreciated since i talked my wife into buying the car!

That does sound like the torque converter locking & unlocking. Maybe check the adjustment of the transmission cable (from the throttlebody down to the trans). How's the transmission fluid? Use Honda ATF.

This is the 'welcome & introductions' area, so I'll move this over to General Tech.

^Yes. At what speed are you running and what is the RPM range? I'm olny asking as I have the same car (mine is a 4 dr) so I might be able to give a base reference as to "normal/average" rpm to mph comparison when it is locked or unlocked....or a partial lock, yes they can do this.

Since you just got the car, I would stongly suggest you think about doing a few drain and fill cycles using Honda Z1 or DW1.

RPM jumps from 2500 to2800 at 65mph. Planning on draining and filling this weekend. shift cable from throttle to trans moves freely but not sure how to go about checking to see if it needs adjustment. Any advice is appreciated since this is my first experience with a honda.

Look in the DIY section for a manual you can download (spoonertuner, manualspace, ect). It will help now and for checking/adjusting the cable and most anything in the future.

If you just got the car and new to Honda. Then yes, a drain and fill of the trans would be a good place to start. Please know that these (5th gen and up) really only like Hoinda Z1 or DW1 (upgrade from Z1) fluid. IMO, do not use anything but Honda fluid in this. And know that more than one cycle might be needed.

EDIT: forgot to answer the question...at 65 mph the rpm's should be 2,500 or less once the converter locks up. After doing a drain and fill or two you might actually see rpm's in the 2~2,250 range at 65 mph.

mine is having and ON and OFF in hway, mostly when it is not warm up completely, but when it fully warm up before getting into the hway, the lockup is steady no jumping around. where should i start looking/check? i have a fresh oil, done 2x drain refill last year october, oil still in good safe i suppose, pink/red and no burn smell.

Start by making your own thread, you are hijacking someone else's thread.
It is difficult to help more than one persons problem at a time.

To the OP - mine used to do the same thing, went up and down about 200-300 rpms even with the cruise control on.

Well that stopped one day...

Hopefully draining and filling a few times with genuine Honda fluid fixes your problem.

Throttle control cable would be the first place I'd start....EDIT: I now see you have a 6th gen, no cable for you.

Then I might pull the solenoid and clean/check them.

thanks poorman, where is that cable located and solenoid as well?
will post a new thread for this though

We can only hope your Asian Accord is similar to USA Accord transmission. The lock-up solenoid is #8 in this picture. Check it for loose wiring or ???

The cable that was mentioned is not on your car. Beginning in 1998 that function was done with software.
