Clutch plate worn out seems likely.

good luck

What am I looking at as far as cost to repair?

^^^clutch plate worn out means clutch is slipping, which is a disconnect, under load, between engine rpm and road speed.

little awkward wording in my understanding book.

So to tell if the clutch is slipping do this, using the 2nd gear test :
write down on scratch pad how many rpms = 20 mph, exactly.
find an isolated hill, head up it and floor it flat out, 2nd gear, starting at ~15 mph
keep your blinking foot in it!
how many rpms = 40 mph?
how many rpms = 60 mph?

so are the 20 / 40 / 60 mph all proportionate to rpm's?
If so your clutch isn't slipping.

If your clutch is slipping your rpms will go to the moon w/o your speed increasing.
You can also tell if this happens, in real time, by your own statement of: "Oh fook!"

hope this helps. then get a 6-pack and post up results
