Transmission flush
 

I have a 2005 honda accord ex w/ 210,000 miles and was looking the car over and notice that the trans fuild was brown. The car runs great shifts hard every once in awhile only from a stop then shifts perfect thru every other gear. I have been told by others that by doing the flush it could mess the trans up but i wanted to ask others that have honda's and that have done this before. I,m a DIY guy and can dang near fix anything just dont want the headach of messing something up thats is'nt broke! I would love to get a least another 100k out of this car. I,m new to the site and by only being here one day i have already fixed the TCS by changeing the stoplight switch!!!! This is a hell of site with people that know all bought honda's. Thanks for the help

Don't do the flush, bad for the transmission, very bad; just change the fluid a couple of times and hope for the best.

Should I take the pan off and change the filter!

There is no pan on a Honda transmission. You simply drain and fill. I'm sure there is a DIY in the FAQ. You only drain out a fraction of the fluid the transmission holds, so you have to drain and fill 3 or 4 times, to do what Honda considers a flush. I would do one drain and fill, then wait a 1000 miles or so to do another. I would use Honda fluid, which you can only get from a dealership. It is cheaper from online dealerships. The 4 cylinder has a drain plug (with a magnet on it), and fills through the dipstick tube, so make sure you have a funnel etc. that will work to fill, before draining. The filter is an inline filter, which I would also change.

The fluid circulates & mixes pretty quickly, so driving 20-miles or 1000-miles between drain/fill cycles pretty much makes no difference. Some people want to do 3-cycles more quickly, other people prefer to do it 3 consecutive weekends. Doesn't matter much.

Once it's clean I would establish a schedule (30k-miles???) for a single drain/fill; where it never gets that dirty in the first place.
