transmission question.

Okay my buddy bought a auto tranny out of a junk yard and when we got home . We kinda dropped it alittle and it took a tiny chip out if the bell housing where it bolts onto the motor. Is it ruined or is fixable or what. We have the piece still can it be jbwelded back on. If we need it. Its only the size of a quarter

update.... pics below in my later post

Pictures would help a lot better than words. My guess is you will be able to get it to work with a little redneck engineering.

Yeah, the bellhousing IS NOT airtight, it mostly serves a structural function. If the chip isn't right at any of the bolt locations (engine-to-trans bolts) then you probably only have to worry about gluing the piece in place to keep too much dirt from getting in there.

Its not where any bolts holes are. Its just alittle piece. I didn't know if any fluid went in there. Ill upload pics tomorrow. But if its just to keep dirt out then it will be okay I think. Its just right on the edge of the bell housing. There is Maby a quarter inch gap when you bolt it on to the motor. Should I try to jb weld it back on or just cover the hole to keep dirt out?

Well, lets see the picture.

What I was picturing, was a piece broken off of the edge where it comes up against the engine. That's not filled with fluid. You should check whether there's any fractures beginning to radiate out from that place, because that's where you have trouble when that crack grows in length.

Sorry for so big I took them with my phone. I don't use my computer to get on the forums just my phone. Its faster. But there's the pics. Will it be okay? Or what should I do?

I think its fine. If I understand correctly this is the shift linkage cover. It is removable (and therefore replaceable) it serves only as a dust shield.

jroxz44 11-24-2012 08:44 AM

Okay should I try to clue the piece in or just fill it with silicone?

JimBlake 11-24-2012 09:54 PM

I think I'd glue the piece back in with something like JBWeld.

jroxz44 11-25-2012 02:34 PM

Okay but its not a crucial piece I really need? It wont affect the tranny?
