Use Honda ATF after used other brands
 

Hi all,
My 92 accord AT has had ATF changed every 30k at shop in the past. I don't know the brands the shop used. I've read this forum and decide to use genuine Honda ATF from now.
Is there any issues of using genuine product after using third party ATF in Honda engine?

I think I'd just go ahead & switch to Honda fluid. Maybe 3x drain/fill cycles so "most" of the fluid will be Honda. If the fluid comes out dirty or anything, then certainly 3x cycles.

What was Honda's ATF standard back in 1992? I'm wondering if DW-1 is even the correct ATF for a 1992 Accord.

The 92 owner manual says use DEXRON II Type ATF.

Then that's what I'd go with. If I'm not mistaken, Valvoline has some Dextron II type ATFs available.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking about what year Honda started using special ATF.

If I had a car which called for Dextron-II, I'd probably use this ATF:

I saw that Valvoline but have been reluctant on it because it's not Dextron II.

Keep in mind, Dexron VI is by definition backward compatible with Dexron II; I do not believe there are any purpose built Dexron II ATF formulations available anywhere in the world.

You're not going to find any Dexron II available anywhere. It's no longer made, because it's been superseded by whatever the latest Dexron is at the store (Dexron VI). This has been a problem for years, especially to GM owners (like my 88 Chevy), as their vehicles were built to use Dexron II. I have an old 70 VW here, that uses Dexron II for fluid, same as a 92 Toyota I have here (called out on both owners manuals).
